"Combine the individual meanings of the two pictures to create a third meaning"
Ideograph is the product of combining one idea or meaning to another different idea which creates a third new meaning. The use of ideographs is not only important in a writing system of Airport-moji (Airport script) as Miller explains but is also an important component of consumerism in America. A part of the driving force in businesses is the use of advertisements which help to create a brand image. The brand image is typically symbolized by the use of a logo and the logo/icon is used to communicate an idea to consumers. It's interesting to think of the certain brand icons that exist, such as the Geico Gecko and Mr. Clean, and how they each mean or symbolize something more than just a reptile or a person. The brands put together can also possibly create a third new meaning. This is true if the brand itself is very 'strong' and that's where advertising comes into play.
"the art of reasoning is the art of marshalling such signs, and of finding out the truth."
I agree with C.S. Pierce’s idea that “the art of reasoning is the art of marshalling such signs, and of finding out the truth". I believe that the act of reasoning is a process in which you think about all the factors (such as people and circumstances) and define them in a logical way to make meaning of the whole situation. Similarly, in order to interpret a sign or to create one, it takes a step by step thought process. Pierce gives a good example of different mind states (feeling, reacting, learning) to explain this concept. One point to add is that this cycle never ends and will continue in the same order.
"image attracts, deceives, imitates, resembles, replaces and animates”
The article Image by Kristine Nielsen gives a comprehensive yet succinct definition of the word “image” through the ideas of notable artists and stories in history. It’s interesting how the concept of “image” is something that seems to be simple and direct but once you try to conceptualize it into words, it’s more difficult and complex. A reason for it may be because of the changes in the purpose an image was used for as time passed. Perhaps a comparison study of the definition of an image in a given time compared to the advances in technology can also help to shine more light on why the word entails many different characteristics. Nielsen describes its multifarious roles by stating, “and therein lies the heart of the matter: an image attracts, deceives, imitates, resembles, replaces and animates”. I believe another characteristic of an image to note is its capability to hold different meanings simultaneously- whether it’s across many people or different meanings for one person.
